VÚGTK - Department of Geodesy and Geodynamics in 2002

Zdiby: VÚGTK, 2003. - S.105-107.

In 2002 the research work of the Department of Geodesy and Geodynamics - Geodetic Observatory Pecný - was financed by the Council on Science and Research of the Government of the Czech Republic on the basis of contracts between the VÚGTK and the Czech Office of Surveying, Mapping and Cadastre. Some projects were supported by the grants rendered by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic and also by the European Union (action COST716). The activities of the department were directed towards both the fundamental and applied research in geodesy and related fields within several international projects as well as towards the participation in international scientific services.

The Center on Earth´s Dynamics Research (CEDR), established in 2000, was an important part of the department. It is a joint project of five institutions - Research Institute of Geodesy, Topography and Cartography (Geodetic Observatory Pecný), Astronomical Institute and Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Czech Technical University Prague and Faculty of Sciences, Charles University Prague. The realization of the joint project LN00A005 "Experimental Research of the Dynamics of the Earth and Its Surface" continued in the Center during 2002.

The following summary gives a review of the projects the department dealt with in 2002.

  1. Fundamental research in mathematical and physical geodesy
    1. Developing mathematical methods for the determination of the gravity field and the shape of the Earth; investigations towards a cm-quasigeoid
    2. An improved assessment of the parameters of the Earth´s gravitational field and orientation in space by combination of heterogeneous data (cooperation with GFZ Potsdam and NOAA)

  2. Investigation in application of geodetic techniques in geodynamics
    1. Building up a database of GPS observations in the Czech Republic
    2. Developing observation techniques at the Geodetic Observatory Pecný for international projects (EUREF EPN, LEO), research for the EUREF LAC GOP, data center GOP and for the GOP center for near real time orbit determination
    3. Developing a methodology of monitoring tidal and non-tidal gravity variations at the GOP
    4. Upgrade of the observation process at the permanent GPS stations in the Czech Republic for monitoring variations in position in Central Europe

  3. Running the permanent GPS station GOPE, analytical centers EUREF GOP and the gravimetric laboratory GOP

  4. International cooperation

  5. Amendment of coordinates of all geodetic points included in the national database on the basis of the database of GPS stations (projects "Densification" - establishment of the densification points by GPS technique with the final density of 1 point/1 km sq. and "Selective maintenance" - establishment of GPS stations with a special monumentation and protection with the final density of 1 point/20 km sq.)

  6. Alignment of the vertical and gravity control networks of the Czech Republic into European systems, amendment of the quasigeoid surface description for the Czech Republic using heterogeneous data

  7. Methodology for testing the system of virtual reference stations in the CR. Experiment with DGPS based on Internet and postprocessing

  8. Investigations of gravity variations at absolute gravity stations in the Czech Republic
