The task of the Branch Information Center (BIC) is to realize an information system of scientific and technical information for the branch of surveying and mapping, cadastre, cartography, GIS and all related fields. BIC had in 2002 the following main tasks:
Activity of the Branch Information Center - management and operation of the Surveying library, acquisition of special documents, reference and information services including the Document delivery services (DDS), literature retrieval processing, loans, creation and maintenance of catalogues, edition of special publications and CD-ROM "Surveying, mapping and cadastre", organizing seminars, courses and consultations. BIC administrates the Surveying library of VÚGTK, which contains more than 40 thousand library units and about 90 thousand of bibliographic records. It is the only one library of our branch in the Czech Republic (CR) of that range (not substitutable function in CR). A digital catalogue of monographs, proceedings, magazines and special articles is accessible on WWW in Internet (the largest of its sort in the world, specialized in our branch and accessible in Internet). In this library catalogue anybody of readers having the Internet access can "turn over the leaves" and search library records of publications, special articles and make his own literature retrieval. During the year 2002 accesses to the WWW title page of the library catalogue reached the number of 5 208, and 25 751 inquiries were answered.

Further activities of ODIS lie in gathering and informational processing of literature and special information, as well as information about funds of the Surveying library. ODIS with its works also supports the newest information technologies in the branch. For the support of them ODIS carries on the own edition issuing special publications. The activity is also aimed at education: seminars, courses and professional lectures are organized.
In 2002 ODIS also fulfilled the following special tasks:
Updating and structuring special terms in surveying, mapping and cadastre and creation of Czech structured terminological branch database usable for needs of automatic documents searching in automatic documentation systems in our branch according to themes and items, and for updating the branch terminological dictionary.
Utilizing the MTL meta-language in the state administration of surveying, mapping and cadastre. An analysis of XML utilization in surveying, mapping and cadastre, and for branch information processing was elaborated including a final recommendation.
Acquisitions of basic ODIS tasks solution lie in the basic not substitutable role of obtaining and gathering special publications and information, in evaluating them, in propagation and making them accessible. Through this activity and creation of metadata, annotations and catalogues, an information system on special branch literature has been created.
